Brown calls for 'economic stability' as bank crisis sparks global panic and leaves FT

Global markets were plunged a downward spiral today after the buy-out of investment bank Bear Stearns, with the FTSE down 200 points on its opening figure at one point during trading. President George Bush admitted the U.S. economy was experiencing 'challenging times' but that the country was 'on top of the situation'
