Lily Cole’s famously doll-like face peers out from the cover of this magazine, but if she had had things her way, her back would be to the camera. It is the morning of the shoot and the 25-year-old supermodel is decked out in sci-fi Céline and a dirty pair of Asics running shoes. "Do you know that painting Betty by Gerhard Richter?" she asks the photographer. "Let’s try that." She swivels to face the back wall of the studio, echoing Richter’s 1988 portrait of his daughter turned away from the viewer. The result is arresting but Cole can’t just blend into the background: she’s the face of – and brains behind – her groundbreaking social network, Impossible.
