The system is there to be PLAYED when people see politicians fiddling and bankers getting bailed out with billions of public money you can see why it happens.the benefits system needs changing but HOW its such a big unruly beast it will take a good and clever trainer to tame it who in this parliament is capable of starting the reform.

I still think many of the jobs are there Chaz. You've just got to be prepared to do anything. When I tried to return to work after ill health from being a Headteacher, I worked in a cheese factory on the production line, then 'graduated' to a position in a Comet call centre. I didn't mind. I'd been raised to work, and I was working. It beat slaving away at a coal face down a pit as most of my family before me had done.

When I registered with the employment agency, they saw my degrees and were surprised when I said I'd do anything. I started at the cheese factory 7am the following morning as they couldn't get people to work there. Also did a short stint on nights at Bristol Airport parking cars - it paid the bills, so I did it.

Ah. So that's why some of your posts seem a bit cheesy. :grin:

And another thing that pisses me right off is those who 'play the system' and use Mental Health as an excuse to lounge about at home 'cos I'm depressed'...trot off to Drs armed to the teeth with all the info they need to make their tale plausible (all gleaned from the internet they have connected at home,and on the computers they have at home)
Now...I'm not for one minute suggesting that every MH case is dodgy,not at all,but a hell of a lot of them are,and in a perfect world the wheat could be sorted from the chaff.
I have clinical chronic depression,,so I take the pills the Dr churns out and I do things I enjoy doing,I'm limited by my mobility issues so I'm an armchair crusader.
I see 'agoraphobics' out in town......how's that done then?
It really pulls my chain that 'depression' is the new 'bad back' excuse..........cos noone can see it and it's easily flipping faked.

When I spent 18 months in hospital recovering from a nervous breakdown, about 16 years ago, I saw, at first-hand, how depression affects people. Some were new mums who came in with Post-Natal Depression. However, there were also those who had recurrent depression that was due to problems with the way their bodies produced serotonin - the chemical that regulates mood - meaning they were not producing enough or it was abnormal in some way. The condition I have - Fibromyalgia - has abnormalities in the manner in which the body produces serotonin and can result in clinical depression. So far, touch wood, I have escaped becoming depressed, but my GP has warned me to keep an eye out for it. A good GP can be a godsend.

As far as agoraphobia goes, it can be treated using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). However, some patients can and do relapse.

Like yourself, Inca, I have limited mobility. I try to get out when I can - my local Community Transport Service is a lifeline in this respect - and the local Shopmobility scheme helps me get around the main shopping centre where I live.

The links below will provide more information on community transport and Shopmobility schemes. In many cases, they can change a person's life for the better. I worked in the sector before the Fibromyalgia onset and can vouch for the positive changes I saw in people who had previously been housebound due to mobility issues.

........As for the posterior insertion method mentioned above, I did write* to IDS et al, suggesting (tactfully, of course) that this may be a suitable method of dealing with his recent proposal regarding unpaid work.

The problem there, of course, is that he would have to do the same with my letter in order to read it.

It's well documented here somewhere that I had a major major breakdown/meltdown after my Mum died and a lesser although still bad one after losing Dad and my sister...3 major crises n 5 years just didn't compute in my brain and just couldn't cope,I functioned and existed but didn't cope.
So,,I empathise wholly with real MH sufferers,I'll be on meds for the rest of my life and I dutifully take them because I don't want to go back to that dark,scarey place.
My recent stint on Jury Service affected me deeply too,,so Dr tweaked my meds,,one extra 10mg pill daily has put me right again.
Depression doesn't stop me working,MS does, Work was my salvation,my escape and I miss it so much hence my annoyance and those that can,,and just bloody won't,,they've found a loophole/excuse and they milk it.
Mental Health issues are not funny,and seeing them waved like a banner to get benefits really really pulls my chain

My mum had MS with Osteoarthritis with a crumbing spine and was wheelchair bound for much of her last 20 years of her life. She would help Dad peel the potatoes from her wheelchair which gave her something to do. Her hands and arms were OK she was just dead from the waist down. Before though she was wheelchair bound she used to be at her sewing machine making curtains for the customers who bought from their linen shop. She walked with a stick then and I don't ever remember her complaining about the pain. She must have been in the most horrendous pain with her back, but if there was a sale to be made, she was there and willing to let the customer go out with the curtains ready to hang. I believe working helps you to overcome your pains and keeps your mind more focused. Was she depressed, I am sure she was, but keeping her mind active took away those feelings.

i have to say that if could more I would . As a full time carer I cant do a lot . But the carers allowance is set up so that going one pound over the limit can not only lose me the months money, but require me to repay the entire year's worth of benefit . Encouragement to work ? I don't think so .
