A £1bn fund to help young people back into work has been launched by the Government as figures show record numbers are not in jobs, education or training.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg unveiled the Youth Contract which is aimed at helping the young unemployed find work or return to education.
The latest figures on youth unemployment revealed that a record 1.163 million people aged 16 to 24 were not studying, in work or training...........

IMHO more abuse in the offing, giving short term work to the young ens then they will be cast back to whence they came feeling even more bitter and disillusioned.

Couldn't agree more, there will be a lot of unscrupulous employers out there getting cheap labour for six months, letting them go and getting another lot on board for six months and so on.
We will consider taking maybe one or two on if they are litterrate and can hold a conversation properly on the phone in plain English.

Sadly where I live, the culture is a Benefits culture whereby youngsters grow up and leave school expecting it, as their God given right, not to have to work and be supported by the state.

I don't want to tar all youngsters with the same brush, many work extremely hard, but there must be quite a few other areas where the culture is the same as it is here.

I also share Sapphy's concerns about those that leave school or education still barely able to read or write. In a shop just last week (Asda) one of the staff had to get a calculator to work out a 10% reduction.

Exactly what happened in the eighties with the YTS scheme. My eldest son went through the same thing. You couldnt move for staff in any of the large shops in town, most of them sitting on their hands, of course after six months as you say they were back on the dole.

There was even reports of firms sacking some of their unskilled labour and replacing them with the cheaper subsidised workers.

Question : Where is the £1bn coming from ?

Answer : From the savings on the benefits the poor blighters wont be getting.

Exceptions to every rule - my brother did YTS, got taken on part time, full time and is now Executive Director of the company that took him on (a massive Government Department).

I think a lot of the trouble is that many people (mostly youngsters I'm afraid) see benefits as wages, and think that there is no need to find work, whereas the older ones of us see benefits for what they are meant to be, basically a way of surviving until we get employment.
The youngsters need educating, they need to realise that there is a life after signing on.
Personally I fear the only way now will be to cut the benefits, make it more worth while to earn a wage, and to stop rewarding people for bringing children into the world in order to gain a home etc.
Yes its harsh but its going to have to be done.
Like the selling off of council houses too, we'd be better off repairing the houses that are standing empty and letting them out first, if they are privately owned then fine the owners heavily unless they repair them and let the homes out.
There's plenty of money available to do this, all we have to do is stop funding other countries and look after this one first, if people want to support people abroad then we can donate individually to what we want to support, that way the Government will save money which can go to projects here.
Before anyone jumps on me about my statement re sending money abroad, I personally fund a younster in Mumbai and also a project in Africa, if anyone wants any details then please ask me.

I suggest we start a Sapphy for Prime Minister campaign. She'd have us all sorted within a year!

Actually, I agree with most of what she says. I'd also go a step further and suggest that those that know their rights and not their responsibilities have them removed. Rights come with responsibilities!

It would also be good to see something done about irresponsible reproduction. I knew a family who had eight children, all by different fathers, and the mum was no more than 27 or 28 years old, had never had a job (as I suspect was the case with many of the fathers). Chopping things off seems a little harsh, but equally why should the state pay for this? Have these people not heard of Family Planning?

Well we have to pass tests/exams to drive and some other things that escape me at the moment, how about an exam before being allowed to breed to make sure of responsible parenting lol, joking we know it wouldn't work but what would work would be saying something like, no more benefits, free housing etc for breeding in say a years time, that way people would know up front if they get pregnant and can't afford the child then they are on their own, a like the old addage 'if you can't feed them, don't breed them'. Of course those already getting the benefits would have to carry on getting them until the child becomes of age or whatever criteria it is to stop the benefit, eventually in a few years the whole idea of having kids to get a home etc will come to an end.
The other thing that really rattles me is how come these underage girls are having kids and the fathers are not being done for statutory rape ?

Always assuming the girl wasn't a little tart and urged the boy on, in which case the girl should be done.

Believe it or not this is a true story. My sister was a Health Visitor and used to lecture to pregnant schoolgirls. She had one who was just 13 years old and on her third pregnancy. The first two had been aborted and she was carrying this one to full term.

If that's not a serious indicator something is wrong, I don't know what is.

I remember in the late seventies one of the african aid agencies issuing transistor radios to men who would agree to be sterilised, an attempt to reduce the rate of pregnancy, i wonder if the same thing would work over here, an i pod perhaps:beagle:.
