A man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary after allegedly breaking into a police station in the middle of the night – and helping himself to a bowl of porridge.
Michael George Allan, 23, was arrested at 4am on Saturday at Altrincham police station.
He is alleged to have been discovered wearing a cop’s uniform – and with a bowl of porridge and a cup of coffee.
He was arrested after allegedly being discovered by a policeman coming on duty.
It is claimed he was wearing a police helmet and jacket at the time. Mr Allan, of Barlow Road, Broadheath, Trafford, will appear at Trafford Magistrates’ Court on March 16 charged with burglary. Police said they were tightening security around the station.
A door that was found broken is being fixed.
Inspector Clark Bowers said: they would be reminding staff ‘to remain vigilant and challenge unaccompanied persons found in any police building who are not displaying valid identification’.
The station is on Barrington Road, a mainly residential area with homes costing up to £1m.
It is not manned 24 hours a day but is a base for a Neighbourhood Policing team.
The same station was at the centre of a drama last month when it had to be evacuated after a man turned up with a hand grenade.
Several nearby streets also had to be closed until bomb disposal officers arrived and took away the grenade which still had the pin inside. The man had found the grenade while clearing out his grandfather's house in Timperley.
