EU Constitution Article to replace reference to Queen in passports.
The News of the World and several other papers report that references to the Queen could be taken out of British passports and replaced with a reference taken from Article 20 of the EU Constitution to European citizenship. The new passports could be in place as soon as 2010. The new wording would explain that EU citizens can be protected by the embassy of any member state in a country where their own country is not represented. A Brussels insider was quoted in the News of the World saying, “Any UK national travelling abroad might experience some delay if they need immediate help – because staff may be out assisting Latvians or Estonians, for example. But try finding one of their embassies in a hurry.”
