I blinked when I saw this. Banks and building societies have moved up a notch from mere naked profiteering to full blown extortion.

The Halifax is now charging an eye-watering £3000 for it's mortgage 'arrangement fee'.

What is it about banks and building societies that gives them the right to just pluck a figure out of the air for any service they provide?

I have had notice of yet another interest rate rise today at 0.25% above the increase to the base rate which means the gap between the base rate and my mortgage is widening constantly.

Well I think thats the problem - they do have the right - and thats because there is no real reguation for what is a huge industry. TV phone-in shows are more regulated than the banks.

They're out of control, like unsupervised children in a sweat shop.

Trouble is, you can't even vote with your feet, cos there is no alternative, so we is stuck with them!
