My father died intestate on the 29th August 2015. I was granted representation on the 19th July 2016, and have shifted all his financial assets into an executors account.
Is it a legal requirement to give notice in the London Gazette that he is dead?
Also, he owned a house but it had been unoccupied for seven years before he died, and was exempt from Council Tax.
What is the Council Tax situation now? Does the exemption continue?

It is not a legal requirement to post a sec 27 notice, but it can prove a protection to the administrator of an estate.
If the estate is complicated you might also consider buying executors liability insurance. Premium is part of the expenses you can claim back from the estate.

Did he really have a full 100% discount for council tax for an unoccupied property? Councils usually make some sort of charge, up to 50%, unless the owner is in hospital or a care home,
Generally you have 100% discount for the first six months after probate is granted, but from then on the council can charge tax.
