When replying to the solicitors, you might care to casually drop in a threat of your own.

Perhaps something along the lines of "However, if, even though aware of the foregoing, you choose to proceed, you will appreciate that this would entail close examination of the manner in which the estate was handled, and of the relationship between the parties concerned".

Update - I've now received a third letter to say they are now commencing court proceedings to recover the money. What happens next?

Any advice on finding a "good" solicitor who specialises in this kind of thing?

Eventually you will receive papers from the court outlining the case against you.
Can't recommend relevant lawyers, but the newspaper article (link in post 31) mentions a London firm who work on a no win no fee basis in this field.
