Legal help needed re intestate death

Hi i hope somebody can advice me regarding intestate. My son’s girlfriend died leaving him and their daughter behind, she had no assets, have a joint tenancy, and she has a car, but also a lot of debt. She was in her early 20’s and had no will, just some handwritten letters. They got a joint account where benefits go and bills go out of. What we do not understand is what happens to say the fridge, television, washing machine or car which they jointly owned, but there is no proof of this? I believe they are called personal chattels? Will he be able to continue using the bank account? My son was also her carer, she was disabled, and so money was and is very tight.
Does he need to apply for probate? They were not married or had an official civil partnership, but have live as a couple for over 7 years together, they are in UK Wales
Any steps and instructions are welcome.

Assume that they had joint ownership of the chattels, and can continue to use them as such.
The bank account needs closing.

He has no right to probate. The hand written letters count for nothing.

The problem is he has no proof of joint ownership and who carries out contacting the debtors and closing of accounts if he has no right to probate?

No just covering all bases as there are debts,bank, loan,credit cards
