How many or how long can caveats be entered whilst attempting to search and find a more up-to-date will without clear evidence of one?

The caveat lasts for 6 months at first, then you can extend it for another 6 months. The caveat stops all applications for probate on the estate being granted during that time.

Entering a caveat can lead to legal action and legal costs. You should try to come to an agreement with the person applying for probate first.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read this: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

A caveat has been entered declaring the will entered as not the original but how long are they granted to find the latest will, surely this can't be indefinitely?

Anyone wanting to propound a will says, in effect, put up or shut up - he waarns you off. You then either withdraw the caveat or proveed with your challenge.

The caveat does not give you six months to go looking for something better. Be very careful of the warning as to costs.
