  • Inheritance Tax paid from share sale

We are about to submit papers to HMRC in respect of Inheritance Tax following the death of both of our parents last year. The amount of tax to be paid is £1,500k of which £1,200k must be generated from sale of shares.Given the recent unprecedented fall in share values, approx 33% since date of death, we need to sell an additional 47% of shares to meet the tax demanded. On completion of 1 year from date of death we will be entitled to recover overpayment of tax, estimated at approx £475k, but the shareholding will already be lost. Are there grounds for negotiation with HMRC, say to defer payment of £475k until expiry of the 1 year?
