  • Simple Will but above IHT threshold - Is solicitor essential?

My civil partner and I want to make a simple mirror will leaving everything to each other and then on the death of the last surviving to leave everything to a number of reputable charities. We have no children and we do not wish to leave anything to more distant family members.

As we will only be ultimately leaving our estate to charities I believe that these bequests will be excluded from IHT so, in reality, no IHT will be payable?* I know that the normal advice with wills is that if IHT is involved a solicitor should be used however we have very little income or savings and want to do it as cheaply as possible.

I was looking at the Co-Op legal service and some other similar ones and they look perfect for our needs.

    Does this make sense?

Ask a charity to help with your will. They should not charge you. No inheritance tax is due if charities benefit.*
