Weird one this. I had a call this morning from SIGMA RED (who upon googling appear to be part of HL Legal / HL Solicitors ). I didn't give them any security information as I'd never heard of them (damn cheek even asking) apparently they are writing to me.
I do have a small outstanding debt with Virgin Mobile from my daughter's phone contract which we cancelled and agreed to pay off the term (usual thing she was spending too much so we took it off her)
The total debt was £128. I made two £50 payments on Virgin Mobile online system (£50 is the maximum you can pay a day so I paid £50 on 26th Sept, £50 on 1st Oct leaving £28) I went online yesterday to pay the final £30 to find the account has a cheque payment against it of £50. As I don't have a cheque book I thought that was a bit weird, so I telephoned Virgin and they said the payment was made by cheque on the 7th of October from a company called (coincidentally lol) Sigma Red.
I'm waiting for Virgin to call me back about it, but to me it seems rather odd that a debt collection company pays off my account (by more than is due) then presumably telephones me to hassle me for money ?
Usually I'd expect Virgin to pass the case to a DCA for some low payment of a few quid which wouldn't be recorded on my account but in their bad debt write off/sale book so this seems an odd way of doing things.
Copy/Paste from my Virgin Mobile account payments screen.
Bit bizarre. Will update when I hear back from Virgin in an hour or so.
Also isn't £50 rather a lot to pay for a £128 debt ?
