  • Stumped by water company!!

    Hi Guys,

I've got a bit of a problem here and I really don't know which way to go with it...............

Ok, 2 years ago (2010/11 years bill) I got into trouble with my water bill, however recently I made arrangements to pay it off, which I have been, at a rate of £20 a month (paid to Alexander James)

Last year when I received my 2011/2012 water bill I set up monthly direct debit and paid it all that way, except one payment which was due 01/02/2012, the payment didn't go out of the bank and they wrote to me, I paid it over the phone so that's 2011/12 bill cleared.

I then today received my water bill for 2012/13. I phoned up to try and make arrangements to pay by instalments as I did last year, and they won't let me make any arrangements! The advisor said 'they are looking to clear the existing debt from 2010/11 first'. I said that I was paying that off and was told that I am 4 weeks in arrears, therefore no arrangement can be set up for this year. I replied that I didn't realise I was 4 weeks in arrears and that HAD I been told I would have rectified it and brought the account up to date, though I don't see how I can be because I have paid it, but that is a different matter.

I am utterly astounded that they won't let me pay THIS years bill. I said that I found it quite ridiculous to stop me paying my current bill, which is not in arrears (as it's only just been issued!) I tried explaining that I don't have the full amount for this years bill, and need to pay by instalments, but the advisor just kept telling me that I can't pay this bill without paying the other one first. If that is the case then why let me pay last years bill by DD all year? I am confused and don't really know where to go from here for the best to be honest.

I have thought of a couple of options but not sure which one would be the best.

    1) Work out what the monthly instalments would be and pay them by postal order (no cheque book) or credit card online, and continue to pay the outstanding 2010/11 bill using the payment card I have.

    2) Work out the monthly instalments and add this to what I am paying off the 2010/11 bill paying the whole lot on the payment card I have.

I just don't know what to do and the water company have been spectacularly unhelpful. It seems to me that they are being deliberately awkward and all it's going to achieve is me getting further into debt with them.

    Many Thanks X

    Hi Monzter,

The reason you've been declined installments is because you were dealing with the first tier Customer Service Operative. I would complain to the CEO - if you look here:

CEO e-mail addresses - CEO email address - chief executive officer - managing director list - UK - US - Asia - customer services - customer care

you'll find his e-mail address. Send an e-mail to them explaining the situation, and if you suffer from any illnesses, are single or whatever which make you vulnerable, put those in, along with your repayment record.

You'll soon find they let you pay in installments. Meanwhile put the money aside each week so you don't get behind with payments.

Thanks Labman I have been and cleared the 4 weeks 'arrears'. I have yet to have a payment schedule or anything to prove that I have missed a payment at all but I have done it to show that I am making payments towards the debt and basically so they don't have that as an excuse..........

I shall email and explain all this and let you know what they say. I have emailed the 'contact us' address but needless to say I have had no reply yet.

      Thanks Monz x

        Re: Stumped by water company!!

Ok, so I haven't received any reply to my email as yet. Strangely enough though I have suddenly received a letter from Alexander James stating that I broke the agreement and it is now cancelled with all the usual threats about bailiffs and courts and things.

As I previously said I cleared the arrears that the water company said I had on the phone (see original post) and as Alexander James still haven't told me from when and by how much I am in arrears, just told me that the arrangement is now cancelled, I'm not sure what to do.

I'm thinking that I keep paying the arrears off at the rate I was each week and wait for the reply from the water company and just ignore Alexander James. I'm not sure but am pretty sure that this Alexander James are part of Northumbrian Water anyway, which means they haven't 'sold' the debt, it has just been transferred to their debt recovery section.

Based in Suffolk as you might expect for a firm collecting for Northumbria Water

They get rather personal on the phone apparently, so as usual, best not to speak to them.

Hmmm once again it pays to stand up for yourself. I've had a phone call from water company today and it is sorted. Many apologies from them over 'any inconvenience caused' and an admission that yes they do have a duty to help customers falling into further debt as they blatantly ignored in my first communications with them, and as I have brought the account up to date immediately then the payment is back on etc etc. I have a payment card and schedule for this years account winging it's way to me as I type. Excellent!

Seems a bit ridiculous that you have to resort to threats of the CEO and water consumer council to pay a bill!! Lol

            Thanks Labman
