Gas storage situation is a farce
Did New Labour once upon a time talk about the idea of joined-up government? It was always wishful thinking, but the tussle now taking place over plans to expand the country's gas storage capacity is in fantasy land.
The energy companies now negotiating with the Crown Estate may be posturing for a better deal, but it seems ridiculous that one quasi-State agency seems to be standing in the way of a Government policy - to increase the amount of fuel storage capacity in the country.
Having frittered away North Sea oil, we are now a net energy importer and we have so far failed - unlike France and Germany - to compensate by building sufficient storage to allow us to buy fuel when it is cheap and store it for a rainy, or snowy, day.
Negotiations between some of the power companies and the Crown Estate are already well into their second year. With the current threat to supplies of big users and only six days of gas in storage, it would be inexcusable were a deal to take much longer
