  • Am I Responsible For The Cost Of A Change Of Prepayment Meter

    Hi all,

    Im actually asking this for my sister, who is single parent, through no fault of her own, blah blah blah, long story, but this is about her electricity supplier. She rents a house from a local estate agent and has been there for the last three years. There is a prepayment meter with the property and she pays up front for all her electric etc. She has just changed over from N power to Eon and has received a final bill from N Power stating she owes £97.00 for the pre payment meter. Apparently about 8 months ago, they changed the old prepayment meter to a new style one, of which my sister wasnt actually even aware of because she still pays up front for her electric via prepayment meter. So the fact they changed to a new style meter was their doing, and not requested by her at any point. They are now trying to bill her for having changed over the old prepayment meter to this new style one. She thinks they are billing her purely because shes moved energy supplier a month ago.
    A) In law can they do this ? Can they charge her for the new style pre payment meter installation a few months ago.
    B) If they can, why would it be so much.

    She cant pay it. She has volunteered a payment of £30 followed by payments of £2 a week and N power have refused her saying they will send in a debt collector which will add further cost to the £97 she owes, and possibly then instruct court which will add further cost. She really does live on the bread line, and whilst I could pay it for her and I will if I have to, I wanted to know legally where she stands on this before I do, and if indeed she is even liable for this. Can anybody help who may know this. ??

    Thanks muchly moo everybody.

    OOH. Dunno. Shouldn't have thought so, but I suppose it depends what it says in her contract.

      Are you sure they are billing her for installing the meter?
      They may be charging her for fuel used and they have not updated the meter to account for new tarriffs. This would then leave her owing the amount stated.
      Also when the meters were changed she should have been given details of the old meter reading and then the new meter should have tallied with that so she could check all was ok.

      If it's because of not updating tariffs then have a read of this and help her fight it BBC - Watchdog: The backdated bills for prepayment meters

        No its definitely for the meter change only. She rung them and thats what they told her. She pays up front for electricity always and is always in credit, I just need to know if she is liable for paying for the new meter. The charge is purely for new meter, nothing else.

            Re: Am I Responsible For The Cost Of A Change Of Prepayment Meter

            I've just had a quick look at their T & C's and it states the following;

            We will charge for:

            • changing your meter if you ask us to, unless you are disabled and we are replacing it with a specially adapted one;
            • moving your meter, unless you are a pensioner, disabled or chronically sick (see below – ‘About your meter’);
            • replacing a damaged meter or meter seals if the damage is your fault;
            • disconnecting or reconnecting supply at your request;
            • carrying out a meter accuracy test if you ask for this and we do not find a fault with the meter;
            • warrants we might have to apply for and visits to your home relating to inspecting or changing your meter; or
            • something you do that breaks the terms of your agreement.

            As your sister didn't ask them to change it I think they are liable for the costs.
            The only time she would have been liable is if she requested a change from a pre-payment to a credit meter.

            We had ours changed from a card pre-payment to a Key pre-payment meter in June and there has been no mention of us having to pay for this.

            Link to T &C's (in case I missed something)
