  • Pre-Pay Meters Press Release

The National Housing Federation have said that overcharging pre-pay customers could breach EU rules.

Tom Brennan did some work on it for the NHF.

    Re: Pre-Pay Meters Press Release

Ive been assured that my new prepayment system is actually cheaper that paying by D.D by scottish power.

I have asked for an enquiry into my bills though, as although we wracked up a 2 grand electricity bill since xmas, we have only used £24 of electricity in the last 2 weeks (my heatings gas so its nothing to do with the weather lol). I dont think energy bills have halved recently have they?

Cutting back, cutting down, cutting off – 16 July

Cutting back, cutting down, cutting off (PDF 878KB) is the biggest ever study of prepayment meter (PPM) energy customers. It shows that around one in six pre-pay households, or up to 1.4m people, are living in homes that have cut off their own energy supply in the last year. The findings are particularly worrying as almost half of households that disconnect their energy are home to someone with an illness or disability, and two in five are home to children under 16. Furthermore, almost half of people who cut themselves off say it happens more in winter, when people most need to keep themselves warm. The Consultancy recommendations to Consumer Focus (PDF 7MB) is also available.

The section about self rationing made me laugh, as I just do it without thinking, if I'm skint and the electrics low, I don't do the washing, have hot water, or cook as they use the electric up, so long as we have lights, tv (of course!) and enough for the kettle to go a few times we're fine.

I have also been replacing the normal filament bulbs with energy saving ones ( hoping Ame doesn't notice because she hates them hehe )

At 10p each from B&Q you can't go wrong really, so you save both on the cost of the bulb, which also lasts much longer, and the energy it uses.

Only bugbear I have with the new energy saving bulbs is that they have a warm up period, the actual light they emit and that many cannot be used with a dimmer switch.
