  • Prepayment Meters

Anyone have any idea on how one can get rid of a prepayment meter, return to paying by DD and how much it costs (if anything) to remove the prepayment meter ?

The story (as many here will know) is that due to unemployment I ended up having to go on a prepayment meter for Electric with E.ON (they also supply my gas but that cannot go on a prepayment meter) as I couldn't pay the bills normally.

As many will know, things have changed somewhat for me and I am now back in full employment. This means that I am now in a position of being able to pay the fuel bills by Direct Debit (and thus get cheaper tariffs).

I still have arrears with E.ON ( don't know how much, but know it isn't huge) that I could probably afford to pay off if I knew how much it is. They cancelled my online account so I can't view my statements, even though I still get regular emails asking to log in online to check my statement (go figure).

The prepayment meter is more of an irritant than anything. I have no problem affording to load the key with money and sticking it into the meter for electric, but the pain is having to remember to do it. Everytime the electric shuts off (cos it has run out before I realised it was getting low) I fear that my computers will not restart. Also, though it hasn't happened yet, I fear the electric shutting off during the night and me oversleeping due to the clock-alarm being off.

Reading around the internet, there seems to be varying opinions on how easy/hard it is to get rid of a prepayment meter. Many state that you must have a good credit record (which I don't) to be able to come off prepayment.

Finally, I have been looking at Ebico's website today as they do prepayment meters but without the usual standing charges. You pay the same on prepayment as a non prepayment customer, so I am considering switching to them if I cannot get rid of the prepayment meter.

I guess I am really looking at convenience here. I simply hate the prepayment meter and want rid of it, or if I cannot get rid of it then I want a way of using it whereby I do not get penalised for the 'privilege'.

    Any ideas ?

Have you asked your current supplier?
That would be my first port of call

      Re: Prepayment Meters

      Hi Jester,
We had a prepayment meter when we moved in, I googled for cheapest electric (we have no gas) up popped BG. Now I do not like them TBH, but I rang and said I wanted to come of prepayment meter, which was with EOn and they are very pricy IMO.
They did the switch over and EOn sent the last statement which I paid.
BG would not let me pay by DD until I have been with them 6 months, Don't know why as i am an ex customer of theirs with no problems, but hey ho I now pay quarterly.
Give your cheapest supplier in you area a ring, see what they say. Enaid x

This house had one when I moved in, took me over 6 months to get rid of mine and cost me £200.

The electric company were extremly reluctant to let me switch beacuse what they failed to tell me was I was paying off the previous owners debt by £7 a week.

In the end we had to switch electric company be on the meter for 6 months with the new company and then they took it away, at a cost. Our electric went off several times too, we quickly learnt to set the alarms on our mobiles as well as the alarm clock!

Ours was removed when we switched supplier and there was no charge providing you can pass a credit check, if not there was a charge £200+ to have it removed. I failed the credit check on this one so my OH did it in her name and passed.

            Re: Prepayment Meters

I had pre-payment meters for both electric and gas, albeit a few years ago. From what I remember, once the arrears was cleared off, I asked them to remove the meter and go back onto normal billing, and they did. Don't remember there being any charge for this. At the toime i was with british gas for gas and M.E.B (changed to npower I think) for electricity.

NATIONAL HOUSING FEDERATION AND PREPAYMENT METER CUSTOMERS

              Austin, John
That this House welcomes Government assurances that, if necessary, legislation would be introduced to outlaw the overcharging of prepayment meter customers; notes that e.on, Scottish Power and npower have equalised charges which they make to their prepayment meter customers with those who pay by quarterly bill, but that British Gas, EDF and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) continue to charge their prepay customers more; further notes that the National Housing Federation calculates that British Gas, EDF and SSE will overcharge their 1.7 million prepay customers by £8.6 million every month over the next year, with British Gas charging its prepayment customers £77 more over 2009 than those on quarterly bills, SSE charging £38 more and EDF charging £19 more; refutes the claim by Ofgem that it has been successful in its campaign to stop this overcharging; congratulates the National Housing Federation on championing the cause of some of the most vulnerable people on low incomes; and believes it is time for the Government to introduce legislation to equalise prepay bills with those charged to people on a quarterly basis.

                About time!!!!!

Hopefully everyone on prepayment will move over to e.on, Scottish power and npower now. Will save people on prepayment meters a bloody fortune.
