I am new to this site and have been trying to sort out a dispute I have had with British Gas since 2001, first of all the beginning of the story - I had electric bills that were probably about the right cost for each year, sometime in 2001 we gave them a customer reading over the phone, as the estimated reading was nowhere near correct, we then had another estimated reading on the next bill at which time we noticed that the reading we gave over the phone was not on the bill.
Shortly after we queried why our reading was not on the bill we had a meter reading attend our property and take a reading and shortly afterwards we received a revised bill and too our shock was over 600 pounds more than normal.
Since then we have disputed this, as we could not see how the bills could be that much different, having read through your threads of other consumers complaints with British Gas, I still have all the bills from before 2001 onwards as well as all paperwork sent and recieved, and have been through them to find out how many were estimated and it seems that we had estimated bills for approx 2 and a half years before this huge bill arrived.
We have had debt collectors knocking at the door, most recently as last Friday the 19th December 2008 about this bill, and when we mention that we have been in dispute about this bill since 2001 they seem to disappear pretty quickly, not only that but we also have a letter from British Gas stating that the person on the end of the phone that took our reading at that time didn’t think we had had given the correct reading so changed it.
they also take a reading when they visit and mention the fact that the reading looks fine to them, and there seems to be nothing wrong with the meter, this always makes me laugh as how can you look at something that is mechanical and say its looks like it is working OK?
Basically my question is having had over 8 years of this too-ing and fro-ing, where an earth do I start to get this finally sorted out and can I use the 6 year limitation thing or the estimated reading for over 2 and half years against them?
Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated and any sample letters that I could send will be very helpful, as this has been going on for far too long.
Many Thanks
