Thanks teaboy!! I don't need anything complicated to do, problem being that I've always had someone to take care of technicalities so never bothered to learn about how the computer works other than very basic bits.

Yes it rolling updates, but you can schedule when to install them. Is most cases where crashed happen its more to do with the users system errors (result of virus, corrupted system files, registry errors, or lack of general maintenance etc etc) or drivers not being up to date and therefore incompatible with recent updates that cause the crashes and not the microsoft updates themselves, though off course their has been some microsoft updates that were to blame, but its one of those things, nothing completely fool proof. Same can happen when updating your smart phones operating system!

When installing, simply make sure the "Upgrade/update this PC" and then just follow the prompts. Its pretty simple, so even the less technically minded can do it.

If you are worried then maybe download and make a live CD/DVD of something like: http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

That way in the unlikely case it goes 'pear shaped' you can boot from that CD to go online and get advice on how to sort it.
