  • Networking with Vista

Hubby and i have just upgraded to Vista ultimate (32bit) edition.

everything seems fine ... in fact i have to say i'm impressed with it...had none of the problems i've heard about. printers, scanners, programs etc all work as they should. the only problem i'm having is getting the network to run as it should!!!

For some reason hubby can see and access my D drive with no problems, he can see the C drive but cannot gain access to it though!

I can see him on the network aswell but can't gain access to any of his drives... apart from shared docs etc.

we've been through all the settings on both.... made sure the drives are shared...even been through and made sure the individual folders are shared...and still the same problem!!! yet it works on mine for D drive!!!

I been scratching my head on this for 2 day's now... still can't figure it out...any ideas anyone?

    Re: Networking with Vista

For clarification Tempty can you put down what each drive is

    Ie
is drive C: your Hard drive
is Drive D: you CD/DVD drive

Obviously it will affect things depending on what the devices are

      Re: Networking with Vista

      LOL
yeah it would help wouldn't it

C and D on both are just hard drives
C being the primary drive with windows installation and D being storage

on hubbies these are physically seperate .. ie 2 hard drives
on mine it is one hard drive partitioned.

      hope that helps

we also have 3 other pc's and 3 (ever so slightly moded..lol) X-Boxes on the network (all other pc's on win XP) we can access all others without problem.

I can see the drives listed but all i get when trying to get through to hubbies is an access deneyed error
and yet the settings are the same on both machines and he can see my D drive.... doing my bloody nogin in this is pmsl

we have not set the pc's up with any passwords either

awwww bum guess you're as stumped as i am then huh.

well i've done some more thinking ... (i know dangerous that...lol) it's got to be some sort of security setting that's blocking it.... all network settings have been checked and rechecked.

so when hubby gets home tonight we're gonna have a bit of a brainstorming session...lol
start by turning of the firewall and go from there...... i think it's the NAT on the router causing the problem.... he thinks it's just a firewall setting...pmsl I'll let you know who was right tomorrow ( i hope he is really...coz if i am some serious port forwarding is the only way round it.... not looking forward to that..lol)

poo well this was one of those times that i didn't get to enjoy the satisfaction of being right!!

it was the router..... 4 hours and endless lines of port forwarding later.....all is working as it should.

well at least i have the satisfaction of not letting it beat me i suppose..... but Geez what a pain in the a** that was!!!

Hi Tempty, Sorry I forgot about this thread...

Glad you got it sorted now though and I know what a pain it is to set up forwarding and firewalls rules etc.

Look at it this way, youve learned something else, and next you will know exactly what to do
