My uncle passed this january, his solicitor contacted my aunty to inform her there were cheques he needed her to deposit. Once given the cheques she deposited them and received the receiptes which the solicitor asked to be returned to him.
Three days after depositing the cheques three police officers in plain clothes came to my aunty's home, long story short, they wanted the receipts and then it turned out these three, two men and one woman were not police officers al all.
The person in the bank who received the cheques had not deposited them but stole them. The three police officers were part of a five person scam ring. The true police now have the original cheques and my aunty has been informed the case could take up to three years to go to trial, as there are two other elderly people involved in being scammed.
My uncles solicitor will not cancel the cheques as this would be the easiest way to have new ones received and she would not lose any of the money.
She is in her eighties and has some chronic health issues.
I have been under the impression she would be able to get the cheques cancelled as this would not interfere with the current police investigation. As the evidence is there with the police.
At every opportunity my uncles solicitor has refused to assist my aunty, refusing to give back the receipts, not informing who the accounts were with and refusing to cancel the cheques, to the point of saying that it would be illegal.
Some help would be gratefully accepted as I'm really unsure what I can do and my aunty's health is getting worse due to these issues.
