Yes compensation payments are disregarded for 52 weeks from the date that the payment was received. DWP want to see bank statements and expenses because you received the money during the period you had an active claim. They need to work out when the disregard starts to apply. They will also be looking for any unusual outgoing payments. Yes you can spend all of your compensation payment - it is your money after all, but you have to justify what you spent it on. So if you paid off credit cards - no problem. Just provide the credit card statement
All they are interested in is when you received the money (obviously where the money came from as well) and whether or not you have given any money away - some people do that. Once you have provided the information and they have reassessed your claim they will close it down as you requested.
