Hi all,
Newbie here, looking forward to any advice anyone can offer.
Picked up a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 3 1/2 weeks ago from a local independent dealer, had 44k and in that time has done approx. 400 more - 270 of that on a one-off work trip, on which it drove fine. It was serviced and MOT'd on the day we got it. Sunday morning on a dual carriageway at about 50mph the engine management light came on - continuous amber. Drove it to the garage that carries out the dealer's warranty repairs who printed off the following codes -
P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1) - On demand
P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1) - Continuous memory
They cleared the warning light and advised that it needed a tank of super unleaded and a good drive - "As Fords don't like unleaded", and that should be fine. I find this hard to believe - I have another Ford and owned 2 previously - have never experienced this. They said if it occurs again take it back - this was yesterday.
Driving today it seemed to struggle over 30mph - and on the way home the engine light came back on - this time flashing, and would not go over 30mph. Dealer said I would have to get it to the garage myself - and they would "plug it in" - not happy about his flippant attitude, and no apology for my hassle.
My question is - assuming I can't reject the car - can I insist they fix it tomorrow, rather than just 'wait and see' that I got yesterday? As this code is also showing in the continous memory means it has happened before, within the last 80 times of use - but not with us so obviously the previous owner or in the dealer's possession. I am really annoyed that I have to take the time and effort to get this rectified and they don't seem to give a damn!
The car was paid for with 2 seperate credit cards if this matters by the way.
