  • Private vehicle sale - Buyer requesting immediate refund.

    Hi,

I'm just looking for some advice on how I should proceed, I sold a car yesterday and declared in the advert that the engine is noisy, to my knowledge due to it being a 3 cylinder, however I'm not a mechanic.

The car was sold for a small price in the knowledge that it needed tlc and this was stated in the advert.

Within 10 minutes of the sale being completed the buyer called three times, one after the other and text 5 times threatening to post on social media and calling me a scammer, which I replied back advising that I'm not a scammer.

He's now asking that I pay for a hire car so that he can take his son on a trip and asking that I pay the difference between what he paid and scrap value, should I proceed with his request given the threats and harassment ? I feel not only harassed but also alarmed and distressed.

    Any advice appreciated,

    Thanks,
    Brad.

Just to add to the above, the car sold for £330 as it needed work and I listed as much as I was aware of, the buyers concern was with a tapping noise in the engine.

I had the car checked over by 2 mechanics and neither mentioned any concerns with the engine.

I've also discovered that he has listed the car for sale at £425 nearly £100 more than I sold it to him for, I really feel like I shouldn't transfer anything now knowing this.

Just say No. You disclosed the condition in the advert. I assume the vehicle was roadworthy.

          Hi,

Thanks for the reply, all known defects were listed in the advertisement and so the buyer was aware it needed work and I listed everything I was aware of.

I feel like the fact he's put it up for sale is accepting the vehicle. Thanks for the advice

Rexading post 3, I don't think that the OP is the scammer here.

Thank you, I offered money towards a hire car etc until I found out the car was up for sale.

I had the below message from the buyer this morning,

"I'm disappointed you are choosing to ignore me after letting me drive a unsage car with a 5 year old child in it. I will be calling the froud team on my bank and posting your full name on Facebook with what you have done."

To which I responded with the below,

"Hi, I'm not ignoring you, as I said I'm away for the weekend and with my family. I was happy to help with a hire care but seen that the car was posted for sale on Facebook today for more than you purchased it for and so I can't send anything on that basis as the car is now for sale. You have two other cars for sale on Facebook and so it was your choice to use that one, not my liability and it was solely your choice. I won't be responding any further after seeing the car for sale, good luck with the sale."

I think I've concluded the issue and thank everyone here for the reassurance.
