It is never too close to strike a deal but they have a right to refuse. Their stupidity however does not help you. Had it been 7 days to trial you could have requested a paer only hearing.
The technically correct thing to do is lodge an application to defer the matter to another date of which you'd bear the cost. However, in a case for a relatively small amount that is plainly absurd. Obviously the best thing is to negotiate but failing this it seems best to pay. If you pay, it is best to inform the court and mark it urgent (even follow up with a call or actually go down in person to explain today or tomorrow). It may also be prudent, but not strictly necessary, to turn up yourself so that any shenanigans can be proclaimed (bear in mind that without the defendants presence the court may tell you to shut up).
