Shame you didn't come earlier. There are a lot of cases where residents are winning. Your lease, which is superior, would have been key to this matter as it probably does not require you to display a permit nor provide for a penalty if you don't. The parking company are a stranger to your lease and cannot modify it without your consent. The signs were probably forbidding and therefore there could not be a contract to break.
Remember for next time. At least the consolation is that it has cost them a lot more than it has cost you.
