  • Parking eye parking query

    Hi,

We've just moved to the UK. Our car does not yet have UK plates although we have notified the DVLA and will be changing them. The DVLA have our address and contact details although I'm not sure how long they will take to update their records.

I went to a retail park recently and used one of the premises. The signage states that the car park can be used for 2 hours. On return to my car I decide to go to the supermarket which shares the car park. Upon further inspection of the signage on my return I am concerned that I may be issued an invoice for overstaying in the car park.

My question is this; since I have foreign plates, will this be pursued? I am concerned that any correspondence may not reach us if for some reason it goes to our old address (which is not in the UK). There are no CCJ's in my former country although there is a small claims process. The country I lived in previously are aware that we have left and I believe they have our current up to date address.

I have receipts for purchase I made when visiting both premises. I could contact the supermarket to see if they would investigate on my behalf but not sure if this a sensible option.

    Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't have thought so, to be honest. It'll probably go in the "too difficult" pile. The reality is though, that the only way to know for sure is to wait and see.

Thanks for replying. Do you think it's unwise to contact the supermarket and ask them to intervene or is this asking for a care to be issued?

I actually contacted my country's DVLA and they said they would provide details if requested but they only have my old address on file and cannot update it.

I am concerned about this causing a problem if I try to buy a house here.

So you may have a CCJ in the old country, that's if PE can really be bothered to try and enforce it. The credit agencies in this country would not be looking at court records outside the UK so your mortgage is safe.

Trying to raise a claim against someone with an address in another country is outside the jurisdiction of a UK court.

It is always a good idea to ask the supermarket manager to help. As i understand it though, you don't yet know if you actually have a ticket ?

            Ostell, yes you are right.

            Mystery1, yes that is correct.

I have been a bit freaked out by all of this since I don't want to inadvertently incur problems for being between countries and not receiving mail sent to the correct address. I think I will leave it unless I receive anything directly. I don't really want to ask to be charged! As Ostell says in the unlikely event of this being pursued it will not be relevant for the UK.

            Thanks all for your help.
