  • Licence Plate cloned

Hello asking for my friend. Does anyone have any experience regarding having licence plate cloning and the subsequent motoring offences committed using stolen plates.

The first they were aware was receiving a FPN - the car with same cloned plates and roughly same model of car were snapped in bus lane and failed to pay congestion charge and ULEZ.

The onus is on them as the legitimate owner of the plates to prove the crime, which they have managed to do due to security cameras at their home showing car parked at time of penalty.

As a result they have had to report to police to get a call reference (no crime number issued yet)
inform DVLA - in writing and their insurance.

Also they have to appeal each and every penalty they receive from TfL the penalties are coming in at a steady rate.

Surely the police can and should give a crime reference and they can update the case police each time they get a penalty?

thanks in advance it is turning into a full time job keeping up with a slew of penalties.

Email TFL, explain what's transpired, give them the information you have, add all ticket Ref No's, keep doing that. State that you await a Crime Reference Number. They will put a block on further tickets being issued. The situation should be 'contained'. That's what should happen.

I have personal experience of this. I have a MB CLC180, I received a notice that I had been speeding and was captured by a static speed camera.
I immediately telephoned the police and explained that the place of the incident had never been visited by me. They took note and suggested that as the photo had been from the rear I put something distinctive in the rear window. immediately after this I received numerous tickets from hotel parking to shopping centres. My only saving grace was that I took a closer look at the photo taken by the speed camera and noticed that the model insignia was that of a MB CLC200. This was pointed out to the police who immediately took action and gave me a crime reference, this enabled me to have all the other tickets quashed.

        Thank you tesla6518

That’s helpful. It is obvious from the pictures there are significant differences, such the actual plate, the interior of the car and the person driving appears to be a woman and the owner of the car is male. The police have given a call reference but no crime ref. I will suggest to my friend that he get back in touch with the police to get this formally in the system.
