  • Highway Parking - faulty machine?

Hi, I'd appreciate some help here.

I recently received a PCN from Highway Parking saying I hadn't paid for parking in one of the car parks they manage. Funny, thing is, I did pay and showed them a banking transaction proving so much. I thought that would be the end of the matter.

However, they wrote back saying that they had no record of the transaction and so the PCN stood.

I lodged an appeal with POPLA but that got declined. I'm at a loss for words.

When I punched my licence details into the machine I got as far as the first two digits before the machine automatically jumped to the payment fee. That's the only explanation I can give as to why my licence details weren't captured by the machine.

I must have done something right as the machine generated a fee, which I duly paid!

Now Highway Parking want £90 from me and I don't think I've done anything wrong. Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else?

There's not a lot you can do other then let them take you to court and you show the evidence that the money was removed from your bank account. THe fact that it is not shown in their records is their failure.

I would suggest that someone previously had typed in some digits but then didn't proceed and your 2 digits were taken as the completion of the a VRM and they issued a ticket. Do you still have the ticket?

It might be an idea to send them a SAR to to see what that throws up.

Sadly, I don't have the receipt. All I have is the banking transaction showing that a payment of £1.20 was made to Highway Parking covering that parking stay.

Would you be interested in seeing POPLA's ruling? I thought this would be an open and shut case in my favour but they found that I had not met my end of the contract I entered into with Highway Parking. I, like you, was of the opinion that the mistake here was not mine. I parked, I paid via the terminal, I left. The fact my licence plate isn't on their records isn't my fault. I paid for the parking in good faith and that should be enough.
