  • What does LAID IN THE ALTERNATIVE mean?

    Hi all,
i was caught driving 64 in a variable speed 50 area on M4. I paid my fine online & sent in my licence. Heard nothing back until today.....a court summons for A) speeding & B) failing to submit my licence!!

I know things can get lost in the post (i’ve just moved home 3 times in 4 months, so nothing shocks me. I accept that my defence of “i sent it” will hold no water, but i have a question for you.

What does “laid in alternative” actually mean?

Does it mean that if i plead guilty to speeding, they will drop the charge of failing to submit my licence? That’s how it reads to me....but my mind doesn’t always compute words very well & i regularly need somebody to clarify what might be quite obvious to most.

    Any help lovingly received :-)
