  • Canceled insurance help

My son took out some motorbike insurance on a bike he bought to commute to his apprenticeship, because he is only 18 we had to guarantor the policy. He was involved in an accident that wasn't his fault and had dash cam footage from the car behind to show this. Upon showing the insurance company the footage they said it isn't enough evidence to pursue a claim. His bike was left unusable and he had to sell it as spares. He phoned the insurance to cancel the policy expecting a cancelation fee, but they have told him "because he made a claim" he has to continue the payments till it ends next year at £115 a month?? a claim was never made as it was deemed the dash cam footage wasn't strong enough. But they are willing to accept a "in house" payment plan to pay off an agreed amount of £750. and obviously if that isn't met his guarantor will face the bill. This all sounds a bit odd and is scaring him silly. Can anyone advise or help? TIA

    Hi S4MCRO

What's the name of the Insurance Company?

There are a number of things he can do.

I'd write a Formal Letter of Complaint to the CEO, explain what's happened (tried to claim), explain that it is 'unfair' (told couldn't claim lack of evidence) and what you want them to do (cancel the insurance without cancellation fee). See what they say, if you aren't happy with what they say / do.

Ask for a final response / deadlock letter, lodge a complaint with the FOS.

What insurance did he hold: third party or comprehensive?
What was he trying to claim from his insurers?

What were the circumstances of the RTA?
Has he raised a claim against the responsible third party?
