  • Didn`t realise I needed business insurance for my job as a carer in the Community.

Hi, I am asking this question for a close friend.

My friend works as a carer in the Community and has done for 6 years, previously she had worked as a carer for 22 years in a Nursing Home . Yesterday, she was stopped by the police as she stupidly wasn`t wearing her seatbelt. The Officer told her she would be receiving a ticket for that, he then started to ask her questions about her job, she told him that she was a carer in the Community. He asked her if she had car insurance and she replied that yes, she had Fully Comprehensive Cover. He then informed her that she didn`t have the correct insurance as she needed business insurance, my friend told him that she had no idea she needed it , he asked if her policy covered her, she said she didn`t know but would ring her insurers straight away, which she did whilst in the police car, her insurers told her that she didn`t have business insurance but they set it up for her there and then.

The Officer then gave her a ticket. On the ticket it states that she wasn`t wearing a seatbelt, which she admits to, but it also says :-

RT88191 - using a motor vehicle without 3rd party insurance.

Please can someone explain what that means as she already had Fully Comprehensive Insurance for the vehicle but this reads like she had no insurance?

Additionally, she may not have had business insurance when she was stopped, but she had sorted it out BEFORE he gave her the ticket. She purchased the business insurance at 17.23, but the ticket wasn`t given to her until 17.38, when in actual fact by that time she DID have business insurance.

Can anyone please advise as to what my friend should do next and if she stands any chance of getting this dropped...she works long hours and needs her car for work, without it, she couldn`t do her job.

    Many thanks in advance.

Yes she does need business insurance. As she's using her car for business. My daughter also works in the community and she has business insurance as it was part of her getting her job. When she was stopped she didn't have business insurance.

Thank you SUEHAM for your reply... I'm confused though as she only uses the car to get to work, so would someone who for example works at asda , also need business insurance as they are using the car to get to work?

When a proposal form for car insurance is completed there will be a question seeking information about the use of the car.
Some insurers will ask if it is to be used for 1)Social Domestic and pleasure
        2)commuting to and from work
        3)in the course of business
Some insurers include 2) with 1)

The certificate of insurance will state what use is covered by the policy.

I cannot see the police dropping this matter if Redrose's friend was simply (if inadvertently) uninsured.
It does depend on what she uses the car for.
As a community nurse does she work solely in the nursing home, or does she visit clients at different sites during the course of her shift.
If she only uses the vehicle to go to and fro one place of work she would need cover whilst commuting.
If she goes to various different locations she would need business use.

To be certain of what cover she holds I would need to see the policy schedule and policy wording

If working at Asda, so long as not using vehicle for work, she would need cover whilst commuting

As Des as said "If she only uses the vehicle to go to and from one place of work she would need cover whilst commuting."

From your first post it seems to be the case, is it?
