  • Council tax by direct debit

    Hi guys and girls,

I got a letter though today saying I owed Bristol city council around £350 for address I used to live at.

When I was at the address I paid every month by direct debit. It now turns out that the amount I paid every month didn't cover the total. I've spoken to the council about this and they admit it's there cock up.

The question I have for you lovely people is am I still liable for the debt or are they just trying to get money out of me?

    Hi Hairydave

Do you have this in writing?

If so, could you post it up with all personal details expunged and any other relevant documents (ditto)?

I can't see how that could have happened, since they set up the DD to cover each installment. The only thing I can think of which may have cause it is when some councils started spreading the annual bills into 12 installments rather than 10 as used to be the custom. If they set up the DD at 12 installment levels but collected just 10 per year, that could have caused the shortfall. :confused2:

Have you got your CT bills?
