  • Hello you lovely people. I have a strange council tax/baliff sitation. Help me please

    Hey guys,

I was living with 4-5 friends in a shared house a year or slightly more ago.

I have moved into a different property with my grandparents and some of the other tenants have moved to London, Leeds and some have remained in our home city.

The residents in our home city have been sent bailiff
letters from the council and although they were addressed to tenants that lived at the previous household (But have moved elsewhere) As friends, they have paid their part of the council tax bill. So, 4/5s of the council tax bill has been paid.

I unfortunately am letting the team down since I don't have any money to the end of this month to pay the bill.

This is where it gets complicated, they have been sending the council tax letters to our previous residence and it has got as far as bailiffs so they have bailiffs knocking at the door charging absurd fees to collect the debt that we weren't aware of since it was delivered to the wrong house.

    What can we do?

What's the best course of action?

    Thanks, you clever bods!

They may have paid the majority of what is outstanding but are they aware they can be forced to pay the remainder as well. It is called joint & several liability. If this happens and your friends wanted to they could then issue a claim against you for your share. The fact you can't afford it at present makes no difference they can chase those that can.
