  • Council Tax benefit/support advice

    Hi All,

Previously I lived with my mum who received council tax support as she is a pensioner on pension credit. They were aware that I lived with her.
We have now moved as I bought a new house. What is the liability now?
The council have sent a bill 'To the Occupier' of said new house with the standard full bill on there.
I am not sure how to proceed.

    Many thanks in advance

Do you mean your mum has moved with you? If not who is living where & with whom?

Yes she has moved with me. She or I get attendance allowance (never been sure who actually gets it but it gets paid) although she is not registeed disabled. Not sure that is useful but thought I would add it.

If that is the case then you need to get on to the Council and file a new claim for whatever Council Tax benefit is now called.

Hi Thanks for the reply. To clarify in iur previous home my mother was the freeholder (although I paid for the upkeep of the house) but in our new home I am the freeholder so does that change things?

The CT is payable as its you and your mother it will be one or both of youand full payment is due ,if you or your mother qualify for CT benefit payment you can claim it this will reduce the tax liability or if circumstances are right zero the payment to you and your mother the benefit will pay it,its quite easy to phone the council and ask?

Ask if your Council has a Welfare Rights Adviser and make an appointment to see them. In the meantime do not delay in claiming.

Thanks guys for the advice. I never really looked into it before and because of the move the CT bill I did not get or see till just recently.
So how does it work if say I got married or moved a girlfriend in does my mother still count as someone who, as ploddertom said could receive CT benefit?
