  • Moving to new house. 2 People on JSA + Me working. Council tax?

Hello there, sorry if this was asked and i might write a stupid message, i just wanted to make sure that everything is ok with council tax.

So in couple of weeks i will be moving to new house, there are living 2 people who are on JSA + Housing Benefits (and guessing also on Council Tax Benefit)

But i'm working. So from what i understand they don't pay council tax. My question is this do i have to pay council tax, and to whom? If yes, on how much do you split it 3 ways or i have to pay in full amount? House in is Band A

The other 2 may be liable to pay a non dependant amount. The amount would depend on your income

I take it you will be sharing a house with another 2 adults who are not part of your household. Council tax is not paid per person but for the whole property, although when there's just one person living there there is a 25% discount, but the amount payable is the same for 2 or more people, it wouldn't increase because a third person moves in.

When people are in receipt of benefits they have to notify any change in circumstances to the DWP, the DWP usually notifies the council but sometimes it may be a good idea to do it yourself to avoid overpayments. A 3rd person moving into their house may affect their entitlement to HB and CTB, it would be up to them to inform the council of this fact and see what they say with regards to CTB, if there's a deduction on their benefit for this reason, they may decide to get this money from you to pay the council.

What type of tenancy is it, if its not a joint tenancy with the other 2 it's possible property may be considered a house in multiple occupation, in which case the owner would be liable for the council Tax. If this were the case the council tax benefit would not be payable either. The owner may of course choose to pass the charge onto the occupies.
