Me, my partner and our 6 month old son live in the annex of our landlords house.
Recently, the council have listed our accommodation on the valuation list, and are now saying we owe them money.
However, before we moved in we had a verbal agreement with our landlords via the lettings agency that we would not pay council tax for the duration of our tenancy.
Instead, we pay £50 pcm towards the CT on the main house.
So I’ve been disputing the CT on grounds that we already pay a contribution.
(I’ve been writing replies to every letter they send me and keeping dated copies of everything)
I’ve also disputed the new listing, saying that the building should be classed as one property not two.
A few points – the council have back dated the tax to our original move in date, not from the date of the new valuation.
If the council are insisting we pay back dated, what about the previous occupants? Of which there have been at least two, as we still get their post from time to time.
We appear on our landlords census and electoral roll for voting. We don’t get our own sent to us.
What can I do? We don’t have enough money to pay back all they want; approx £2,500.
If you need more info, please ask, but I think everything’s there.
I Would really appreciate any help, as I’m getting very worried now.
It’s got to the point where me and my partner can no longer afford to live here, (we’re on very low income and my maternity allowance is about to end, which unfortunatly has been used to pay rent and not buy things needed for our son) and are having to move the three of us back in with my parents.
Many thanks in advance,
RugRat
