  • council tax revaluation

    Hi all,
Looking for a bit of advice for my mother. Recently some people in her street applied for a revaluation of their property and some got the bands reduced from a band E to band D. My mother lives in a smaller house in the street and has been a band C since 1993. Without requesting it, the VOA have reviewed my mothers council tax banding and moved her into a band D, saying that she should have been in a band D the whole time. They are saying the new change is effective from december this year (though the VOA officer did hint that councils may try to back claim incorrect valuations - meaning nearly 20 years worth of difference from band C to D)

As I understand it, the VOA state on their website there are to be no council tax revaluations at present and the current parliament have ruled out such revaluations. Im wondering why the VOA have visited my mothers property without request and decided to up the band. Well, I say im wondering - its clear - larger houses in the street have gone down to band D so they have to put up the other houses to not lose money. I guess my questions is can they do this without my mother requesting it? Any way to counter this? The appeal is one route but im going to bet thats the standard waste-of-time-were-doing-it-anyway route. Also can they back date the difference to 1993?

    thanks!!
