We have signed a contract with a solicitor for work to do with our house, this is sort of pre sale, dispute resolution work. The work went very slowly and we had a deadline that solicitor took all the way to the wire, kept giving us dates he would get work out but didn't, at least 5 times did this. We had started to complain in writing but he got wind and then mobilised himself, quickly got the work done. He is very good, but clearly has too much work on and is highly in demand, he did a good job but was very stressful waiting for the work to complete. We signed a contract, which included conveyancing work, we haven't started this work in fact house isn't yet even on the market.
We don't want to go with this solicitor for conveyancing, I cannot see anything in the contract such as pre payments or cancellation fees etc, just hourly rates, it does say cancellation should be in writing though, I don't think there is any further initial work to do. Can we go to another solicitor without informing the first one? or do we need to inform them? its been months now that we've not heard from first solicitor and they said they would send a bill within a 'few days' - this hasn't arrived so far! I just don't think he has the time to do the work honestly...although I am worried that if I say we are going somewhere else he will send an inflated bill, I have no idea at this stage the cost of the work, he said it would be more that he originally said, but as cheap as possible. I do think he is a lovely person and solicitor but honestly have lost a bit of faith due to the promises of completion of the work followed by delays. I have an idea that we would be waiting years to exchange contracts if we used him for the sale and purchase!
