Letting Agent Dissolved

Hi there
I rent a house in Inverness, this was through a letting agent, McLeod Lettings, and the rent was payable to a property agent, AMAC Propertys. I noticed that my direct debit to AMAC had been returned 'PPayment returned:account unable to accept credits'. I contacted the homeowner who knew nothing about this and the due rent was paid directly to him.
After a bit of searching I found out that both company;s had been dissolved so after a bit more searching I found the directors name and messaged him, his reply is as follows:

Alexander Macleod has accepted your request.

Hi Sorry but I have no idea at all whom you are or indeed what property you rent ! My ex wife runs these businesses and has done some last year as she took these house cars and everything else !! Best I can do is advise you go see her as she is not answering phones or emails as far as I am aware ? She lives at She should be in most days as I believe parties all high and gets out of bed after ten !! She has a 65 plate silver Mercedes estate so if it is in drive she will be in house Sorry can't be of any more help but I am unaware of the situation your claiming as in companies dissolved. I am trying to get my deposit back and have searched the various deposit schemes but can find no evidence of my deposit ever being paid into one. How do i proceed now in having my deposit returned? Any advice would be appreciated

Your rent is due to the person or company named as "Landlord" on your tenancy agreement. If the rent collection vehicle no longer exists that should make no difference to your liability to the Landlord.

You say you've been in touch with the homeowner. Are they named as Landlord on the tenancy agreement? If so why not pay your rent direct to them (if they are legally the Landlord)?

Are you wanting your deposit returned because you are planning to give notice to leave? Or are you understandably concerned that you may have paid it to a business which has ceased trading? Either way your Landlord is responsible for all deposit issues so even if an agent has gone bust the Landlord must still return the deposit at the appropriate time.

Some Tenants don't pay the last month's rent when moving out telling the Landlord to utilize the deposit for the payment instead.
