  • gas concern next door

    hello
we have a concern that next door (currently let out) has never had any of its gas appliances checked or serviced following a conversation with another neighbour who knows the LL and is a registered plumber
we have informed the LL via the letting agent (rent pick up only)we are concerned because their meter has been making really loud grinding noises that we can hear clearly through our wall all times of day and night
yet he has not acted and the noise worsens daily
all we really want is to be secure in the knowledge that the equipment is safe next door and that we wont have to bear the noise any longer
We have tried the supplier but they wont act without the tenant or LL arranging it, as we dont get on with the tenants we are a bit stuck on where to go with it
Would Gasafe be a good place to start?
    many thanks in adv

    Re: gas concern next door

Hi and welcome, as it is only hearsay that next door has not had any of the checks required by law maybe putting your safety first (as is a must) would be the way to go to solve this. I would contact HSE http://www.hse.gov.uk/gas/domestic/index.htm with your concerns and also put it in writing you have done so to the Letting agent and the LL if you know his contact details.
If the LL has not followed the rules and regs on gas safety then the HSE has the power to issue warnings and take court proceedings.

The meter is the property of the utility company and is therefore their responsibility. They don't need to 'arrange' anything in order to inspect. Is it outside or inside? Immediately accessible?

Write to the landlord, the letting agent, and the utility company, setting out your concerns (writing creates a paper trail and provides evidence, if required, of their negligence. They are aware of this and are more inclined to act once pen hits paper).

Is there any smell of gas outside or inside the flat/house? If there is, ring 0800 111 999. This is the national Gas Emergency number.

If the letting agent or landlord are not carrying out mandatory gas safety checks, they are breaking the law.
Life is a journey on which we all travel, sometimes together, but never alone.
