  • Horrific Harassment by neighbours, threat to life, scared to go home.

Hi, my best friend is suicidal. She and her husband have 3 girls and live in a housing association property.

They have been harrassed by neighbours constantly, being shouted at from the street, people knocking on their door late at night, eggs and tomatoes thrown at their house, tyres slashed, gloss paint thrown on their car windscreen and now last night their living room window smashed with a golf ball.

The police have been called every time (about 20 times), the Housing Association called every time but nothing happens.

Last night their little girl was showered in glass. The HA has even boarded up their letterbox in case of petrol bombs and installed a security light but thats all.

They have asked to be moved, in fact pleaded with them (I even wrote a letr on their behalf about 2 months ago) but the the HA have refused, saying they didnt clear up their dog's mess quick enough (their dog has pancreatitis and they do keep on top of it but next dor neighbour complained about them). Their next dor neighbour has complained about their noise. One of the little girls is deaf so they need the tv up slightly louder and with Police cars coming round so much, their girls dont sleep well as are terrified which has led to obviously a bit more noise at night. The Police although helpful have been unable to catch anyone, detained a couple of people a few weeks back but let them go uncharged. They all stayed at a friends last night, but they are terrified to go home. They both work full time but the stress that has been put on them is awful. She has shouted loudly to everyone that will listen but no-one is doing anything. She has contacted her MP (no reply), the HA (3 different people), the Police (constantly)

What on earth can she do? They are desperate to move anywhere, they dont care where, they just want to be safe and not terrified every day.

Can anyone give us some advice please. She is really at the end. No-one should have to live like this.

    Many thanks

He holds surgeries on most Saturday mornings by appointment between 10am-12 noon.

Give them a call and arrange to see him 01491 613072.

These people should have been arrested and evicted long ago. Consider taking out an Injunction. Ask for a power of arrest to be attached to it. You will need a log of incidents in order to make your case.

It would be worth taking this up at a much higher level with the Police. Local officers are under pressure to avoid awkward statistics. The higher ranks are more politically savvy - a high profile suicide or harrassment related murder will most certainly be something they want to avoid.

Have you made a formal complaint to the HA, about the HA? Have you written directly to the CEO of the HA?

Find out who the Trustees are and write them directly - preferably at their home address. Make it clear that HA staff are falling down on the job and that serious repercussions are inevitable.

Who actually owns the properties (the HA, or the Council using an ALMO)? If the Council, then go straight to the Chief Executive.

When meeting your MP at his surgery, speak to him in language that he understands - make it clear that there is going to be adverse publicity.
