  • Rogue Landlords Beware

    Hi Legal Beagles,

I'm hoping to be back in the not-too-distant future. For the moment, I came across this today which should send out a warning to all rogue landlords -

Good to see action being taken, shame the fine is so low and the council did not try to confiscate the properties under environmental health powers to remedy disrepair.

Interesting to see 'anti-social behaviour' being defined in this way.

I'm on Omeprazole for life, but that is a small price to pay to prevent this happening again. I'm still a bit anaemic, but I'm eating plenty of iron-rich foods to bring my iron levels up to normal.

It is possible that the disrepair is such that it would be too heavy a burden on the public purse. All too often, rogue landlords allow their properties to fall into disrepair and leave the council tax payers to pick up the bill. If you ask me, a council should be given the power to seize all of a rogue landlord's properties, including those that are in good repair. Can you imagine the shockwaves that would reverberate through the private rented sector if that were to happen? It would certainly make private sector landlords toe the line. The cruxt of the problem is that too many Tory politicians have their fingers in property management or ownership companies and it is in their interest to oppose or water down legislation to crack down on rogue landlords.

I am aware that the same council threatened the CEO of South West Water with an ASBO for not dealing with the smell a sewage treatment works was giving off and that was blighting the lives of local residents. The CEO thought he was untouchable, but after taking legal advice, found he wasn't and work was commenced to address the problem very quickly. If used in the way Plymouth City Council did with South West Water, ASBOs can be very effective in dealing with companies and businesspersons who are a danger or menace to the community.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm doing my best to get well and stay as well as I can, fibromyalgia permitting.
