  • Accomodation For Services

I will much appreciate your advice about potential risks and problems that may occur in the following arrangement:

    1. We have a small furnished one bedroom mews house which is currently empty.

    2. Our UK home is close by (within 5 miles) .

    3. We are thinking of offering for a set period (initially perhaps 6 to 12 months) our mews house to a couple in exchange for an agreed number of hours of domestic service each week. (In the region of 20 hours).

    4. We have a house in Mallorca and spend approximately 4 months absent from our home in the UK. During these times we would arrange for the couple to live at our home.

    5. The plan is that no money changes hands.

    6. Effectively we plan to allow the couple to occupy our mews house for a set period in exchange for a set number of hours of help each week.

First Question: would this arrangement fall under any property letting rules.

Second Question - what documentation would be required to protect both parties. - would a memorandum be sufficient signed by both parties ?

    7. As an added complication currently we have the possibility of a young couple who might be interested in such an arrangement.
I understand they are legally married however they are Wife (Romanian) Husband (Albanian)
The Romanian wife wife works in the UK completely legally however the husband has been applying over the past months (more than 12) to be allowed to work in the UK. Currently he has been given no permission, but permission has not been refused.
What would be the advice to us regarding this couple if they wished to take up the proposed offer as above and his situation was unresolved. ?

    Thank you.
