Hi all, My mother in law (no jokes please) is living in a private rented property (for 31 years now) and is having dire problems with the landlord in terms of living conditions. The property has three bedrooms upstairs (no upstairs bathroom), one kitchen, one WC (downstairs) with no hand basin and one Bath (downstairs seperate to WC) with kitchen in between the 2 and one living room (downstairs).
The problem is that they have a severe damp/mould problem throughout the property so much so that her husband was admitted to hospital in Dec 2007 due a shadow on his lungs (although he does smoke).
The property has a water supply which can only be turned off from a main supply which in turn switches the whole street off.
As soon as you enter the property you are over come with the scent of damp which has a over bearing effect on you to the extent that you want to go outside regardless of the weather outside.
My mother in law addressed her concerns to her landlord to which he got two building companies in to give quotes for works which needed to be carried out. Both building companies presented their findings to the landlord who both said that the property needed a full overhaul including new roof, re-wiring, central heating (non in at the moment), new bathroom to be moved upstairs and new kitchen!
The problem is that my mother in law only wanted the damp problem sorting out and the property owners solution is to put a couple of wall heaters in the property and a hand basin in the exremely small WC. Unfortunately wall heaters are not going to resolve the damp/mould problem which is mainly in the small bathroom which is black with mould and the plaster is actually falling off the walls.
Does any one have any advice where we can go from here as this problem is having such a detrimental effect on the mother in law (although I wouldn't say no to her butting out at times) and her health that it's getting to the point where she may have to leave a house she has lived in for 30 years.
Thank you in advance
