  • Selling equity to father and inheritance

I’m in a bit of an unusual situation with a most. I own a property with my father. This is the property where my parents reside and was purchased 8 yrs ago. Theres 11 yrs remaining in term and we collectively own around 85% equity in the property. I am now in a situation where I am looking to buy a property with my partner and need to remove myself from this mortgage to increase my affordability prospects. The mortgage broker has suggested that I sell my equity to my father in order to be able to achieve this so I can be mortgage free.
My father is happy with this but wants to ensure that my inheritance isn’t affected by this. He is currently 63.
Is there anything we need to be aware of?

There may be Inheritance Tax issues. You and your father should take appropriate professional advice.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf
