  • WIFI debacle - landlord refused us wifi once we were in the contract

Hi guys, and thanks in advance for any advice, I'll try to keep it as brief as possible.

In november 2022 me and a mate moved into a two bed apartment in a new build block in south london. we signed a year contract with 6 month break clause.

asking abouy the wifi situation we were told we'd need to change it over with engineer etc etc to new provider. so we booked in with vodafone wifi who booked an openreach engineer for 9 weeks time (mad i know but it was coming to christmas time and told high demand).

so 9 weeks both buying more and more data on our phones to hotspot laptops so we can work from home, then comes to january 9th and engineer arrives to switch over the line and he looks at the cable and says "sorry thats copper broadband, thats now obsolete, we only do fibre broadband... im going to need to drill a tiny hole above the front door to run the fibre cable into the communal box outside (where every other flat on the same floor is connected to). i was about to say yes but our lettings agent has already been problematic with us for small things so i told him to hold fire whilst i text and asked the agent. she said shed ask the landlord (lives in swtizerland) and told me to hold fire with the engineer. 20 mins later she texts back quite abruptly saying "no. in no circumstances may u drill the whole" so i phoned her and put her on video with the engineer for him to explain that it is the only option we have to have wifi as the old copper cable was defunct. she stubbornly said no again and i sent the engineer home.

i then immiediately handed my notice in to leave after the 6 months was up, and she said the landlord said hes willing to look at alternatives. such as 4g dongles etc (which are far too slow to do video calls on for work). i then continuedly messaged her daily asking if the landlord would allow us to install the fibre, and she stopped responding completely to texts emails and phone calls.

in order to get her attention i withheld my next rent payment (4 weeks after the engineer visit) and she obviously texts me asking where it was to which i just replied asking about when our wifi can be installed (both me and my flatmate had spent hundreds extra on increased mobile data bundles). she said the landlord "was sorting it" (hmmm taking 4 weeks of no response) but wont do a thing until ive paid the rent up to date. we had a bit of a mexican standoff, until i buckled and paid the rent. but still no update of wifi or any solutions. we are moving out in a few weeks but I was just wondering if i have any right to compensation of any sort as we spent 6 months being refused wifi and spending hundreds more on mobile data and working in the office, when we both have remote positions. if so, any advice on who i should speak to, i dont want them getting away with it

    thanks people

You have not said what, if anything, the tenancy agreement says about Wi-Fi. I have the impression that this is something you thought about afterwards.
