  • Refused Housing

Hi Everyone. We have rented of the church of england for a while now. They want to move a new vicar (we are not clergy lol). The church sent us a letter telling us to leave but because of covid we are still in the house. We have applied to our local council for council housing but the housing officer has told us that they will not do anything until they receive court papers for our eviction. We have informed the church and asked for the paperwork but they will not send us anything. My question is can a local authority refuse to consider us for housing just because a landlord is not doing what they are supposed to?

    Thanks

You are not homeless nor likely to become homeless within the next 28 days, so the local authority are following the law.

This may be an obvious question but why not look for a house in the private rented sector? Less stress for you, less cost for the Church and you get to live somewhere you want to rather than B and B in a not so nice part of (perhaps a distant) town.

Hi, I am also renting off a diocese. You can't be considered for housing until you receive a notice of eviction. These are council rules designed to relieve the pressure on them to comply with their statutory obligations. As it stands there is an enormous backlog of evictions for non payment of rent. Don't go more than one month in arrears. It could be months, or even years.

Most councils in the UK won't even consider people for emergency housing, until the Bailiffs are walking up to the front door.

Some may be lucky to end up in temporary accommodation like a B&B or with another private LL.

Sorry to be blunt, but that's the way it's been going for a long time now in the UK.
